Monju Bosatsu (Monju Bodhisattva)

  • Wood = Cypress (Jp. = Hinoki), Finely Carved, Very Lightweight
  • Statue Size = H 19 cm, Front-Back 7 cm, Side-Side 11 cm
  • Zushi Size = H = 26 cm, W = 14.5 cm, Back-to-Front = 13 cm
  • Four pieces: (1) halo (2) lion pedestal (3) deity's effigy and (4) sword
  • Monju sitting atop a roaring lion, which symbolizes the powerful voice of Buddhist Law and the power of Buddhism to overcome all obstacles; in right hand holds sword of wisdom to cut through ignorance and dispel the darkness of the deluded mind; in left holds the Sutra of Wisdom outlining the virtues one must practice to attain enlightenment 
  • IMPORTANT NOTE: There is no set standard for the position of the lion. Above we see the lion's head to the left of Monju, but one also commonly finds the lion's head to the right of Monju. No significance should be assigned to this positioning.
